Altitude Acclimatization Tips

Understanding Altitude Sickness (AMS)

Acute Mountain Sickness can affect anyone above 2,500m. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

Do's

  • Ascend gradually, spend a day in Gunji for acclimatization
  • Drink 3-4 liters of water daily
  • Walk slowly, take frequent breaks
  • Practice deep breathing exercises
  • Listen to your body, inform guide of any symptoms

Don'ts

  • Don't rush or ascend too quickly
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, and sleeping pills
  • Don't ignore headache or dizziness
  • Don't overexert yourself
  • Don't continue ascending if symptoms worsen

What to Expect During the Journey

Weather Conditions

Expect temperatures ranging from 5°C to 20°C during the day, dropping to -5°C to 5°C at night. Weather can change rapidly in mountains. Pack layers and waterproof gear.

Accommodation

Basic guesthouses, homestays, and tented camps. Don't expect luxury - focus on the spiritual journey. Most places have shared facilities. Carry your own sleeping bag for hygiene.

Food

Simple vegetarian meals (dal, rice, roti, vegetables). Pure satvik food without onion-garlic. Limited variety in high altitude areas. Carry dry snacks and energy bars.

Communication

Limited or no mobile connectivity after Dharchula. BSNL works best in some areas. Inform family in advance. Embrace the digital detox as part of your spiritual journey.
